Fernando Muñoz

Fernando is a medical doctor and epidemiologist with a distinguished career in public service and the academic world. He was Chile's deputy minister of health for four years and, more recently, represented his country on the Executive Council of the World Health Organisation (WHO). He has designed and implemented major reforms to the Chilean health

service, including the health component of the Childhood Social Protection System.


He taught public health and pediatrics at La Frontera University for many years, and now heads the Policy and Management Division of the public health faculty at the University of Chile. He has published widely on public health and epidemiology, and has participated in many research projects in the fields of health policy and service development. Notably, he took part in DISAL

[GG1] , a nation-wide survey of the management and performance of Chile's regional health services, as the lead analyst for the Biobío region.

Fernando holds degrees from the University of Chile and the University of Pennsylvania. He now lives in Santiago.
